Disclaimer: This isn't about sports, it isn't funny either. This maybe not be directly about sports, however, Barstool is the reason I started blogging, and if you are any bit interested in the drama at Barstool in the past 48 hours, here is insight from one of the biggest supporters west of the Mississippi.
Big Cat retweeted a 10 min video explaining why he is upset with founder Dave Portnoy.
Yesterday, we saw that Dave Portnoy had an interview with President Trump. What a dream it would be to interview the most powerful man in the world. I have rooted for Portnoy and his company's success since around 2014. I have been a major consumer of Barstool content for about five years now. How crazy is it that one man could literally pound the pavement selling his Bets and sports articles on a news paper, and some 15 or so years later turn that into a $450 Million Dollar company, and interview the President of the United States. When I saw the picture of the interview with the President, I thought "good for Portnoy." I no longer think that.
I don't like Politics. I hate them actually. Politics are nothing but slimy people, arguing, and never ending debates. I have respect for everyone. Love who you love. Do what you want. Give me a mutual respect that I have for you and I will be happy with whatever you do or don't do. You don't find that sort of acceptance in politics. Politics are the greed of humans who want power and to run the world in their vision. I don't pay attention to politics because I don't care to argue with a super right or left wing. People ask me my political views, and I tell them I don't have any. Ask me what party, or which way I lean, and I will tell you that I don't pay attention, and that is the truth.
All that is to say: Barstool has never been a fully Political organization. They have never had a 100% real opinion on the second amendment (or any other thing that is regularly argued in politics). They have never pushed for one candidate or another. They started out as a sports blog, and have turned it into something so much bigger than that. In 2020, it is hard not to talk about politics. And that sucks. During quarantine, I consumed the most Barstool content I ever have. I learned about different niche personalities in the company that I had only heard about. I ended up following them to see what they were about. Now, daily, from sun up to sun down and before and after that, I consumer Barstool content.
As I previously said, Interviewing the POTUS is something that ever blogger, reporter, podcaster, etc. dream about. I don't blame Portnoy for taking the bait. In the past, I'm sure Barstool has wanted to interview Trump. Maybe before his presidency. Maybe during. I can't tell you for sure. What I can tell you is that the White House reached out to the fastest growing entertainment company in the United States, just months before the election and asked to interview Trump. Do you see a trend?
Politics are Toxic.
This finally takes me to the video Big Cat retweeted of himself. On the Yak today, Barstool's Channel 85 on Sirius XM, Big Cat talks about why the situation is important to him. Big Cat is arguably the second most recognized person at Barstool. You can say that is cocky that he mentions that, but it is true: people who aren't die-hard Stoolies probably know Portnoy, then Big Cat. In the video Big Cat describes how he has never wanted to do political content. He knows that Barstool is an escape for many people to get a laugh, or read/listen to 'sports talk', while escaping the real world. Big Cat has recently declined to interview Joe Biden for that very reason. He doesn't want Barstool to be affiliated with politics, I don't blame him, cause again, Politics are mostly just people arguing.
I also don't blame Portnoy. He has been through the grit and the grind from taking a loss every month to selling his company for $450 million dollars. He wants to interview the President: it is an enormous accolade for any writer to have.
Who is to blame if both parties are innocent? Politicians. I said this earlier, but I will reiterate. I find it interesting and slimy that they would reach out to the fastest growing entertainment website in the USA (if not the world) months before an election to ask a future candidate some candy-ass questions in an interview.
Here's the video. It is a tough topic for me to write about because this is my favorite personality at my favorite company speaking out against his boss.
The best way to fix this is to not release the interview. That would make Big Cat happy, and Dave would know that if he ever wanted to interview Trump after the election, for no political gain, Trumps door should be open... because then he would actually want to have an interview with Portnoy without gaining anything for himself.
Disclaimer:
Yes, Politics are important. Why should I, a partially-educated 20 year old argue with someone about politics? Lets leave that to POLITICIANS who study that shit everyday.
Vote how you want, and keep it to yourself. Don't wear a Scarlett Letter that says "republican" or "democrat" because in my eyes, you are BEGGING to start arguing about why guns are good or bad.
